Termites
termites Termites can be extremely dangerous for your house. The chances of your house coming under termite attack are greater than floods, fire and natural disaster combined. Termite damage is not covered by your standard home insurance and treatment is expensive. CSIRO and other experts estimate that 1 in 5 houses are likely to suffer a termite attack. Termites look like ants, but they have no visible eyes, they have straight antenna, no visible waist, are pale or white in colour.

How termites grows

Termites thrive on decaying plants and wood. Termites live in colonies anywhere between a few hundred up to a million. Termites have a complex lifestyle, different termite’s castes perform different roles within the colony. The termite queen lays the eggs, worker termites nurture the nymphs, the soldier termites protect the colony, and the reproductive termites fly off to form new colonies. Termites make nests underground, in the root crown of a large tree or even on the branches. Termites are capable to travel up to 100 meters to a food source and over 80% of homes in Australia are estimated to be within 25 meters of a termite nest. It is likely your house is within the range of a termite nest.

Damaged caused by termites

Termites are dangerous for your house structure. Termites consume 5% 0f their body weight of wood per day which is a tiny amount, but if you consider a million of the chewing away, they can easily consume 100g of wood per day which is a significant amount, which over a year is 36.5 Kg of wood. If the termite is not treated, after a couple of years they will have caused enough damage that your house may have to be demolished.
